OTHER
PROBLEM AREAS
A potential problem area that
could affect a good BQA/CMP Program is bulk fed fat and
other rendered products. Just as with grain and forage,
steps should be taken to ensure that purchased fats and oils
do not contain a residue. Discuss the quality of product
with your suppliers and request information concerning the
quality, stability, efficacy, and consistency of the product
you feed to your animals.
Your
feedyard may be approached by sellers who offer to sell you
a cheaper source of feed grade fats and oils. The product
that is usually offered is a blended product from several
sources and the potential for contamination increases. If
you are buying a blended product, be aware that the quality
of the product may be inferior.
Before
purchasing any fat or oil, ask the supplier if he is
pretesting any of the product. A reputable dealer should
already be testing his product for the following
contaminants:
Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCB’s)
Chlorinated Hydrocarbons (CHC)
Pesticides and Herbicides
Heavy
Metals
Salmonella
Tall Oil
(Hydrocarbon)
It is
your responsibility to assure the safety and the quality of
the product purchased. Discuss with the supplier as to
whether or not he is stabilizing the feed fat. This will
help assure quality of the product. You may wish to take
into account whether or not the product is stabilized when
determining its value to your feedyard.
