Section 10 - Animal Health Product Records

The purpose of a health product record is to enable a participant to produce a record which will show where the product came from and create an awareness for expiration dates.  Most systems fall into one of two categories.

The most common type of system is a receiving record of all animal health products.  A calculated or theoretical usage calculation can not be determined by this record; however, it will allow for tracing product origination as well as expiration date awareness.

Some facilities employ a recordkeeping system which allows animal health products, processing medications and implants to be recorded under a "running" or beginning and ending inventory.  This also allows for product usage calculation.  Such a record can prove to be a great economic benefit when charging and billing customers for these products.

A receiving record will not allow for either a current inventory record or a product usage calculation without further paperwork as does the beginning and ending inventory record mentioned earlier (SD BQA/CMP Form 510 - Animal Health Products Receiving Record).  However, a receiving record on all animal health products will be sufficient for the SD BQA/CMP Program.

Several pharmaceutical sales companies have developed computer programs to control all animal health product inventory records.  The product is recorded at the chute at the time of administration via a chute side computer terminal or manually from a handwritten system consisting of an individual treatment card or a processing work order form.
