The
cattle business is tough enough without practices that do
not make economic sense. Beef Quality Assurance is
economically logical. Everything that is asked in the SD
BQA/CMP Program is part of good business management. The
information gained from the records kept will allow for
better business decisions and avoid costly production
mistakes. Involvement in SD BQA/CMP is a statement that
reminds everyone involved from the producer to the processor
that everything possible is being done to produce a safe and
quality product that is free of defects.
Participation in the SD BQA/CMP Program is one way to
provide documentation for consumers that cattlemen
responsibly raise beef. Consumers lose confidence in beef
when they find a defect that escaped a cattlemen’s facility
and entered the food chain. Loss of consumer confidence in
beef causes significant changes in their eating habits
resulting in the consumer choosing an alternative meat over
beef. This in turn results in loss of market share due to
lack of consumer confidence, which is plaguing the
industry. Involvement with the SD BQA/CMP Program can
provide cattlemen an important key for avoiding government
regulation or civil lawsuits that pertain to food safety.
USDA’s Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) has commended
the National BQA Program as 47 states currently have BQA
programs. This program of regulating ourselves has proven
very successful and will continue to allow industry
flexibility needed to produce food in an economical manner.
BQA/CMP is a good business practice that can identify and
avoid certain potential production defects.
